Before I begin ranking any QB's in this years draft I just will say there is not one franchise type QB in this year crop not one. None of them bring fear in any opponents eyes except for Newton just for the fact he can run but nothing else. My rankings will be totally unusual compared to many other analyst out there but this is how I see the QB class.
- Andy Dalton TCU- Proven winner enough said. All this kid is do is win. Dalton is catching steam as of late and pushing himself into the 1st round as of late. I know of plenty of teams who grade Dalton as a late 2nd to mid 3rd round pick, but most believe he'll come off the board sooner than that.I know he probably won't go in the top ten but he has my vote as the best QB in this draft.
- Christian Ponder FSU-Locker entered the season with all of the hype. However, Ponder earned the same grade as the Washington passer by National Football Scouting, an evaluation service to which roughly half of NFL teams subscribe. He may not have the arm strength that all these other QB's have but he has the mobility and the ability to make accurate throws when needed and is a proven leader off and on the field.
- Ryan Mallet Arakansas-He may have some the off the field issue but you can't take his pure talent he has for the position of QB. He is probably the most NFL ready of any prospect in this year draft he has all the tools you look for.In terms of pure passing ability, Mallett deserves to be at the top of this year's quarterback class, not squarely in the middle of the "second tier." Mallett's 62 touchdown passes (only 19 interceptions) against SEC competition the past two seasons serve as a mighty testament to the strength and accuracy of the Howitzer he has for a right throwing arm.The only drawback is he is very slow but that didn't stop Brady or Peyton .
- Blaine Gabbert Mizzou- Overrated: Gabbert saw his production fall in his junior season and ended his career throwing an interception that was returned by Iowa for the winning points in the Insight Bowl. Scouts like Gabbert. The problem is, no one seems to love him. That shouldn't happen for a player expected to be a top five pick and possibly No. 1 overall.
- Ricky Stanzi Iowa- Underrated: Gabbert's opponent in the Insight Bowl -- checks in as the most underrated. Stanzi is like a lot of the underrated players on this list: better on tape than he's been in workouts. He has ideal size (6-4, 223 pounds) and has made consistent improvement throughout his career. Stanzi could prove quite the steal in the middle rounds.
As you probably have noticed I do not have either Jake Locker or Cam Newton in my top 5 for good reasons.
- Locker Washington- first off next Brett Favre my ass don't get me wrong he is a incredible athlete but he has horrible college stats and is not a proven winner at all so what makes you think he will be any different in the NFL.
- Newton Auburn- also a very gifted athlete but he had one season at major college level and basically dwarfed everyone on the field as he ran down field. That says something he does not trust himself in making throws down field that is why you always saw him running out of the pocket making plays himself. that is what you want your QB to be doing unless your name is Vick.
Who is the ideal Patriot given draft projections?
- Ricky Stanzi Iowa-read what I said about him earlier in blog. Also he has been coached by a Belichick protege as well in Kirk Ferentz.
- Pat Devlin Delaware- Ideal size draws comparison to fellow Delware star and current Ravens starter Joe Flacco. And though Devlin's statistics improved this season (239-of-350, 2,812 yards, 22 TD, two INT), he will still come up short when compared to Flacco in draft rooms because of lesser size and arm strength. He has enough size, poise, athleticism and accuracy to earn a mid-round grade as a project passer worth watching.
Sleepers who could make you second guess yourself why didn't I draft them instead .
- Mitch Mustain USC- Just think Matt Cassel all over again. Not to that effect but I think he may have a shot. He did start as a freshman at Arkansas before transferring out west to USC.
- Colin Kaepernick Nevada- He may just benn known for running the pistol offense but think again. Colin has been vigorously training to prove all the doubters wrong he can be a NFL QB.Three-year starter is a tremendous athlete and a very mobile prospect who set too many college records to count. Strong arm, can laser the ball, also has a 90-plus mph fastball as a baseball pitcher.
Tune in next time for my RB preview.
