2011 Fantasy Football Preview:Team Defense

I sometimes forget how important a fantasy D/ST unit can be to winning a fantasy game each week. I get so caught up with who to start/sit at the QB, RB, WR, and TE positions that I end up not even thinking twice about my D/ST for that week.Even with as important as a D/ST unit is to winning fantasy games, it's important not to draft them too high in drafts.  It never fails - the top rated D/ST unit will fly off the board in round 8 or round 9, and somewhere within the season it ends up costing that owner.  Don't be that guy.On to the rankings.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers D/ST - With a Hall of Fame defensive coordinator like Dick LeBeau calling the shots, they'll be a top 3 fantasy defense all day long and twice on Sundays.
  2. Green Bay Packers D/ST - Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Clay Matthews, A.J. Hawk, B.J. Raji..should I keep going?  Ok, Nick Collins, Desmond Bishop.
  3. Philadelphia Eagles D/ST - The Eagles are beefing up their defense all over the place.  Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins and Nnamdi Asomugha are all in Philly now.  Damn.
  4. New York Jets D/ST - Last year was a bit of a disappointment for this Jets unit, yet they still finished as the #5 scoring defense.  Rex Ryan won't allow them to suck.
  5. Baltimore Ravens D/ST - Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are cornerstones, yet aging.  Terrell Suggs and Haloti Ngata make enough plays to keep this unit starting fantasy material.
  6. Chicago Bears D/ST - This Bears D/ST lead the team to a division title and on into the NFC Championship game.  Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher and company flat out get after it.
  7. New England Patriots D/ST - Who was fantasy football's #2 scoring defense last season?  The Patriots were.  It sure is nice to play the Bills and Dolphins each twice a year.
  8. New York Giants D/ST - Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyora absolutely wreak havoc on quarterbacks.  23 sacks and 16 forced fumbles just between the two of them in 2010.
  9. San Diego Chargers D/ST - Bob Sanders adds more punch to this Chargers defense.  He'll get hurt, but with or without him this defense is capable of nice fantasy numbers
  10. New Orleans Saints D/ST - Aubrayo Franklin and Shaun Rogers are run stuffers and they addressed their biggest need with standout pass rusher Cameron Jordan in the draft.
  11. Detroit Lions D/ST - Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley, Louis Delmas and Alphonso Smith have the Motor City excited about this defense.  Fantasy footballers need to take notice.
  12. Atlanta Falcons D/ST - Adding fellow pass rusher Ray Edwards to a line that already includes John Abraham has this unit climbing the rankings.  They'll get after the QB.
  13. Dallas Cowboys D/ST - DeMarcus Ware is a one man wrecking crew.  Outside of him, nothing really excites me about this squad.  They'll be over-drafted again this fall.
  14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers D/ST - Tampa went defense with their first three selections of the draft. Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers can both make noise as rookies.
  15. San Francisco 49ers D/ST -  There's a ton of talent up and down this defensive roster.  Patrick Willis is a bona fide star.  They have a weak division of opponents, too.
